Wisconsin farmers need a “dairy boost” to help improve their economic situation.

UW Ag agent David Fischer says an increase in milk prices would be a big help for farmers. They’re currently selling at around $13 to $13.50 a hundred-weight right now and he says that needs to increase $2 or more at this point for dairy farmers to start getting in the black.

Fischer says $15 a hundred-weight is when farmers will stop digging that hole. Anything higher than that, will allow them to start climbing out.

However, Fischer says it will take an even bigger boost in milk prices for Wisconsin farmers to start recovering lost equity. He says that might not happen until fall, since milk sales typically slump in the summer when school is out.
