As a legislative committee prepares to vote on a statewide smoking ban, a leading opponent is confident the bill won’t become law.

Action is scheduled today in the Senate Health Committee, and while it may pass there, State Senator Roger Breske believes it will fail to pass on the Senate floor. Breske believes he has the votes needed to kill it, if it does come up for a vote.

The Marathon County Democrat is a former President of the Wisconsin Tavern League, which is fighting the ban. They want the proposal to exempt taverns, but supporters of the ban have said that won’t happen. Breske says those bar owners pay a lot of taxes, and should be able to decide whether or not to allow smoking in their businesses.
