State Senate Republican Randy Hopper faced some tough critics Monday night during a listening session in his district on the state budget. Many speakers commented on the proposal to severely limit the collective bargaining rights of public employees.
“What is the pound of flesh they (public workers) have to give up before this governor is satisfied,” asked one woman.
Another speaker said Hopper was “anti-Wisconsin” and accused Republicans of lying. “Don’t be up there in Madison…telling lies about us about tearing up the lawn and all this other fiasco, about ruining the capitol when you’re ruining our rights.”
One of the few there who supported Hopper for his stance on the budget said, “I thank you and I thank Governor Walker for keeping us off of that paths that states like California and New York and Michigan are on.”
Senator Hopper, who sits on the legislature’s budget writing panel, tried to make a closing statement to the crowd, but was constantly interrupted by an audience member. He did meet individually with people after the session which was held at UW-Fond du Lac.
