Traffic was delayed for three hours Sunday on Interstate 94 in Racine County, after suspected human waste was spilled on the southbound lanes.

Officials with the state Department of Transportation say a spill of a “liquid non-hazardous substance” covered about 30-feet across all three lanes of the freeway. The source of the spill has not been revealed and an investigation is ongoing.

The State Patrol in Waukesha said it could not be cleaned up right away, because so many vehicles drove through it. The material began to harden, so officials decided to leave it in the roadway and clean it up overnight.
