The Department of Natural Resources' Greg Matthews says it's pretty impressive how safe the gun deer hunt is in Wisconsin each year, considering there are more than 600,000 people wandering the woods with loaded guns. Matthews says last year, there were just 14 accidents and three fatalities. Matthews says we've come a long way from 1914, when 26 hunters were killed.

Matthews believes steps taken by the state have helped to protect hunters. State hunter safety courses and blaze orange requirements are credited with keeping the woods safe during hunting season.
