A preliminary tally shows hunters registered 112,581 deer over the first two days of this year’s nine-day gun-deer season, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Despite a range of weather conditions throughout the state, hunters killed about 5.6 percent more deer during opening weekend this year than from last year.

More than 600,000 hunters were out Saturday morning for opening day, of which nearly 54,000 were women, an increase of 1,486 from 2010. Preliminary numbers show the buck harvest was 57,977 and the antlerless harvest was 54,604.

There were no fatal shootings recorded during the first two days of the hunt and two non-fatals — one in Clark County and another in Waukesha County.
