The state Office of Commissioner of Insurance has completed its review of insurance providers wishing to participate in the Obamacare health insurance exchange.

In order to be eligible for the federally facilitated exchange, insurers must meet all state standards, and file their rates and forms with the state. Insurers began filing policies with the state in April. OCI reviewed the rate and form filings to ensure the policies are in compliance with all laws and regulations.

Insurance Commissioner Ted Nickel said this is only the first step in the process, and that insurers wishing to participate in the federal exchange will need to complete an additional federal review process and sign a contract to participate on the exchange.

OCI reviewed filings from 13 insurers that requested their plans be certified as a qualified health plan (QHP) in the individual market, and 9 insurers that filed plans to participate in the Small Business Health Option Programs, or SHOP exchange.
