A Central Wisconsin financial institution that works with farmers is putting its money where its hopes are.

Farm Credit Financial Services in Wausau could see where the trend is going. The state is losing farmers and farmland. So, CEO Mike Krutza says the board decided to give 50-thousand dollars to the UW-Madison school for beginning farmers.

It's the first time the institution has given a donation this large to any organization but Krutza says they were impressed with the school's success in actually producing new farmers. Krutza says not only does the state need people with passion for the land but the school helps train people to understand the economics as well.

Krutza says the dairy industry often thinks the more dairy cows the better but this can be daunting for a young person just starting out. He hopes, with the help of the Farm Credit's seed money, the school will continue to show young, potential farmers how to make their start-up operations viable.
