GOP candidates for Lieutenant Governor agree on a lot — including using the office to advocate for issues.
Jean Hundertmark gave up her seat in the state Assembly to run for the state's number two job. Current Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton has used the office to advocate for issues she cares about, and Hundertmark says that's not a problem. although Hundertmark says she'd widen her focus beyond what she says as Lawton's concentration on women's issues. “I believe that I will be representing men and women in that role,” she says. Hundertmark adds that she's particularly interested in working on attracting and developing businesses and jobs for Wisconsin.
Hundertmark's opponent in the Republican primary, former Sun Prairie alderman Nick Voegeli, also says he believes in the advocacy roles — even if he were to disagree with a Republican governor. “An individual occupying one of these offices owes it to the citizens of the state top speak independently,” says Voegeli.
Republican primary voters will send Voegeli or Hundertmark on to the November general election to face Lawton and Wisconsin Green Party candidate Leon Todd.
