Prairie du Sac is in the chips this weekend.
The Sauk County village is once again hosting the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw, an event media coordinator Craig Schollian says has something of an international flavor, past participants have come from London, Australia, China, Japan and Canada. Organizers have been hard at work for weeks, gathering and drying the cow chips. Each contestant must select two chips, no smaller than the size of a ping-pong paddle, and give 'em their best throw. Schollian says the overhand pitch seems to be most effective.
And — apologies to the dairy industry here — Schollien says they only use chips deposited by beef cows. Dairy cow chips just don't have the strength to stand up to competitive cow chip chucking. The men's record in Prairie du Sac was a toss of 258 feet.
