As classes get back in session over the next several weeks, the Bureau of Transportation Safety’s Pedestrian Safety Coordinator Larry Corsi reminds motorists to add a little extra time to the morning commute if driving near schools and playgrounds. “Well, all summer long, the motorists have been able to just breeze through school zones, but with schools opening, when you see children: slow down.”

Corsi says, while it’s common sense, don’t forget to look both ways before entering intersections because kids can be unpredictable. He cautions motorists to watch for pedestrians and bicyclists in the crosswalks. Also, Corsi suggests parents remind their kids about safety while walking or biking to school. “When there’s not a crossing guard available, look both ways before you cross the street; make eye contact with the motorists to make sure they see you. If you’re getting off a school bus, don’t cross the street until the driver gives you the OK.”

Essentially, Corsi says, kids need to keep their eyes peeled and make sure it’s safe to cross the street before stepping off the curb. He says school crossing guards will also return to their usual spots. Motorists should also be alert for flashing lights on school buses and that familiar extended stop arm. Wisconsin law shows that if the red lights are flashing, motorists must stop.
