The American Birkebeiner cross country ski race off today with takes place Saturday in Northwest Wisconsin. Despite the warm weather last week the ski trail is in beautiful condition, according to Sheri Morgan, American Birkebeiner media cordinator.

“Skiers in our office over the weekend said it was some of best skiing we’ve seen all winter, so that’s good news.”

This year will be the largest amount of skiers they have every had with 11,000 expected from 19 counties and 47 states.

Morgan gives the people of Hayward and Cable credit for “pulling out all the stops,” along with 2000 volunteers.

The event begins with opening ceremonies in Hayward. On Saturday the cross country ski marathon, the largest in North America, will take place.
