An American obsession with illegal drugs is a big reason why the nation’s borders are not secure. U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) says that the’s lesson he’s learned over the past week, while traveling the state to talk to citizens and law enforcement.
Johnson says those discussions have shown him how drug use causes a host of community problems. “If there’s one big issue that is driving so many problems in our communities, in our state…it’s our insatiable demand for drugs,” he argues. “It’s drug cime, it’s the broken families, it’s the broken lives.”
The Senate’s homeland security chairman says it makes the U.S. borders less secure, noting that Mexican drug cartels have expanded their product lines and use sex trafficking and illegal immigrants as diversions. The Wisconsin Republican believes the nation needs to boost its public education to discourage young Americans and others from abusing drugs.
Johnson is starting the final year of his six-year term and will face former Senator Russ Feingold in the November election.
