The state’s first Republican to win a U.S. Senate race in 24 years says he’s going to Washington to try and control spending.

Republican Senator-elect Ron Johnson didn’t offer many specifics about his plans to cut spending while on the campaign trail, but today he announced that he wants to establish a spending cap and possibly create a Constitutional amendment to balance the budget.

Johnson says that until a hard spending cap is established, it’s unrealistic to believe that members of Congress are going to cut spending. The Oshkosh businessman, meeting with reporters earlier today, says voters showed on Tuesday that the out of control spending and debt can’t be allowed to continue.

Johnson defeated three term incumbent Senator Russ Feingold in Tuesday’s election. He says he’ll immediately start putting his Washington staff together, so he’s prepared when it’s time to get to work.

He also pledged to work with Governor-elect Scott Walker to scrap plans for a high speed rail line between Madison and Milwaukee, saying it’s something he doubts will have a high level of ridership and believes it’s something the state can’t really afford.
