Recent mass shootings in Wisconsin and Colorado have renewed the national debate over gun control, with many calling on the federal government to take action. While U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) says his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, he does not believe there’s anything the federal government can do that would prevent future tragedies.

A shooter in Oak Creek over the weekend killed six victims and critically injured three, while a gunman in Colorado last month killed 12 people and injured dozens more. In both cases, it appears the shooter used legally obtained firearms.

Johnson says there’s no “silver bullet solution” in Congress that would address what prompted those men to open fire. Instead, he says a discussion needs to take place in our communities, education system, and churches about what has created a culture that allows these types of tragedies to occur far too frequently.

Johnson says he just doesn’t see a solution to the problem coming out of Washington.
