U.S. Senator Ron Johnson is listening to local concerns regarding national security. Johnson, who’s facing a reelection challenge from Democrat Russ Feingold, is holding listening sessions around the state.

“I want to hear what’s on their minds, their concerns about national safety,” Johnson said in Green Bay on Wednesday. “As chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, I also want to hear from local officials, are they getting information from the federal government, how is that information flow going?”

Johnson said it’s part of facing the risks posed by Islamic fundamentalism. “We can’t bury our head in the sand, we have to face that very harsh and ugly reality. From my standpoint, the first line of defense against Islamic terrorism is effective intelligence gathering, which includes sharing information with public safety officials,” Johnson said.

The Republican senator will be in Superior and Hudson on Thursday, and in Madison on Friday.
