The most recent state Supreme Court race has resulted in legislation that's before the state Senate today. It's the Judicial Right to Know Bill from Green Bay Democrat, Senator Dave Hansen. The bill requires that litigants in civil court cases be informed of how to check for potential conflicts of interest by the judge hearing their case. Supreme Court Justice-elect Annette Zieglar is accused of having a conflict of interest in at least five cases she presided over as a circuit court judge. Hansen says this bill isn't about Zieglar. “We're not trying to cast aspersions on anybody, we're just trying to clean up the system,” he says. The bill cleared a Senate committee on a 3-2 party line vote Tuesday, and is scheduled to go before the full Senate today. Also Tuesday, the state Supreme Court decided not to dismiss a conflict-of-interest complaint filed against Justice-elect Ziegler, by the state Ethics Board, clearing the way for a May 17 hearing on the board's complaint.
