So far, through minimal polling, I've found mixed reviews concerning the WIAA 's likely future ban on bare-chested fans at indoor High School athletic events.
The WIAA's sportsmanship committee voted 6-0 to recommend the ban. A 16-member sports advisory committee of state athletic directors meets next week to consider the recommendation. If it passes there, then the WIAA's Board of Control will vote the measure through at its June 19th meeting.
I chuckled when I heard of the measure. The first thing that came to mind was the fun police are at it again.
I'm not sure the shirtless fan with his body painted in school colors, was hurting anyone. But, when it comes down to it, it's not the end of the world either. The ban would cover only indoor sports and affects such a small number of people.
When you watch or attend a high school game, how many knuckleheads do you really see with their shirts off, painted up to the max. You can probably count them on your two hands.
If you have to take your shirt off to show your school spirit, then there's something wrong.
To me, shirts off, no big deal, shirts on, again no big deal. The rules are changing and if you don't like it, don't go. I don't think you'll be greatly missed.
