Law enforcement and traffic safety officials from around Wisconsin meet in Green Bay this week to discuss highway safety. “It provides an opportunity for law enforcement and traffic safety official from around the state to get together and share best practices on highway safety and traffic-related issues, looking to prevent deaths and injuries on our highways.”

Randy Romanski with the Department of Transportation says, among other topics, they’ll talk about motorcycle safety, older drivers, and strategies to increase safety belt use and discourage drunken driving.

Romanski says trends on the roads are getting better. “I think it’s the third consecutive year Wisconsin has had fewer than 600 traffic deaths in 2010 and trends so far are continuing in a positive direction.”

Still, he says, we could do better. Romanski says any fatality on the roadway is one too many.

The 37th annual Governor’s Conference on Highway Safety is Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 30 and 31).
