When the conversation rolls around to talk of players competing for the 2013 US Open
Championship, Steve Stricker’s name pops up. Stricker may be the best player to never win a major. He was up and down on day one and settled for an opening round 1-over par 71.
There’s another Madison player that hasn’t been heard from for a while but made a little noise on day 1. Jerry Kelly went to the final hole yesterday, sitting at 2-under par. Kelly double bogeyed 18 and his 2-under turned into an even par 70.

Kelly has just one top 25 finish in his first 10 starts this year, but he’s coming around and his timing couldn’t be better.
Kelly ranks sixth on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy, which is going to help at Merion where the rough is nearly impossible. Staying in the fairway is a premium at this event.
