The Kenosha City Council wants to revoke permits to build a Walgreen’s store even though the building is up and running. The permits were granted long ago but aldermen claim the company lied about the impact of the new location and about the closing of a previous store.
Jan Michalski said Kenosha already has a bad reputation with business, “We should make it more desirable for business to come to Kenosha rather than say ‘well you angered us so we are going to try to force you to close down this store you spent many thousands of dollars building.”
Daniel Prozanski said other businesses should take note of this, “Not that Kenosha isn’t hospitable to business, just don’t lie to us because we’re going to call you on it.”
A resolution calling on the mayor to start revocation of the Walgreen’s permits was approved 13-to-3.
The new store opened a few weeks ago, and the downtown site closed last week, upsetting residents who relied on the proximity of the former store. Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger told Kenosha News, “We built a store less than a mile from the existing location and we feel we have enough there to meet the needs of our patients and customers in Kenosha.”
