Kenosha takes its turn saying farewell this weekend to a city native who died in the line of duty while serving as a police officer in Fond du Lac. Craig Birkholz was shot and killed responding to a sexual assault complaint last Sunday.

Kenosha Police Sergeant James Heiring says they are all too familiar with losing an officer in the line of duty. Kenosha County Sheriff’s Detective Frank Fabiano was shot and killed during a traffic stop in May of 2007.

Heiring says several of their officers went to high school with Birkholz and he was interviewed for a job with their department. He  feels Birkholz would have been an asset to any department he worked with.

The Kenosha Police Sergeant says 100-to-120 of their officers will be at the funeral Saturday morning. Another 300-to-400 squad cars from across the state and northern Illinois are also expected to attend.
