The trial of a man accused in a six year old hit and run death is underway in Waupaca County. A witness in the Rory Kuenzi trial described Kuenzi as drunk when he left an underage drinking party in October of 2004, shortly before Kevin McCoy was struck and killed by a vehicle. Walter Engel testified that they heard a thump, but Engel said he was looking back at a trailing vehicle and did not see what Kuenzi struck.

Testimony began Monday in the Waupaca County jury trial of the 26 year-old Kuenzi. He’s charged with hit and run causing death, and homicide by drunken driving in McCoy’s death. Assistant state attorneys general Dennis Krueger and Jeffrey Gabrysiak are handling the prosecution.

Kuenzi came to statewide public attention in 2009 when he, his younger brother Robbie Kuenzi and a third man, Nicholas Hermes, were charged in connection with the running down of deer with snowmobiles in the Waupaca County town of Lind in January. Animal mistreatment charges against the Kuenzis were dropped.
