Former Congressman and Defense Secretary Melvin Laird of Marshfield offers his ideas for the U-S next steps in Iraq.

In an opinion piece in Wednesday's Washington Post, Melvin Laird draws the connection between the U-S involvement in Iraq to its involvement in Vietnam. He says if Congress cuts off funding for Iraq, much like it did for Vietnam in 1975, then the result will be a bloodbath. Laird calls on Congress to stop "the partisan gamesmanship that feeds on itself" and replace it in part with the will of the American people. He says lawmakers need to demand accountability from the Iraqi government and to recognize the enemy for who it really is; radical Islam.
