Telemarketing calls dominate the list of complaints from consumers reporting possible violators to state officials. Wisconsin’s No Call list aims to reduce the amount of telemarketing calls to both land lines and cell phones.
Officials at the state Department of Consumer Protection say not all unwanted calls are violations of the law that took effect in 2003. Political and charitable organizations asking for a donation are exempt from Wisconsin’s No Call law. Consumers should also keep in mind that an increasing number of illegal telemarketing calls are made from outside the country, but the state cannot take enforcement action in foreign countries.
Over 2.28 million phone numbers are currently on the state No Call list. Cell numbers make up nearly half of that total. If you want to avoid frequent calls from telemarketers, you have until the end of the day to sign up for the list that takes effect January 1st.
Consumers must register every two years to stay on the list. It is updated four times a year (January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1) to weed out old, inactive numbers and keep it current.
