The Milwaukee Brewers got sloppy late in the game yesterday and fell to the Washington Nationals 5-4.
Manager Ron Roenicke was upset after the game after Rickie Weeks, whose run-scoring single off of Nationals closer Rafael Soriano tied the game, was thrown out on the back-end of a double-steal attempt with Carlos Gomez. Roenicke said the trail runner must be sure he can steal the base in that situation. If they don’t get a good jump, then that trail runner should stay put at first base. If Weeks would have stayed at first, Ryan Braun’s subsequent deep fly ball would have been a go-ahead sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Nationals Jayson Werth sent a Rob Wooten pitch into the left-field corner. Anthony Rendon was at first base and the Nationals tried to score him. Had Brewers left fielder Khris Davis not overthrown the cutoff man (Jean Segura), the Brewers would have likely thrown out Rendon at the plate.

Yovani Gallardo got the start for the Brewers and was given a lead that he couldn’t hold. The Nationals scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead on a two-run homer by Ryan Zimmerman. Gallardo allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in six innings and was not involved in the decision. The loss goes to the third and final reliever, Rob Wooten (1-4).
The Brewers dropped 2 of 3 in the series against the Nationals and have lost 13 of their last 16 games overall.
The Brewers return home to Miller Park tonight to open a series against the Cincinnati Reds. Wily Peralta (10-6, 3.72) faces Cincinnati’s Mat Latos (2-1, 2.79) in the pitching matchup.
