The Senate version of the state budget may ensure children with autism are able to receive treatment.

The legislature's budget committee initially removed a mandate for insurance companies to cover autism treatments. But as the Senate gets set to take up its version of the state budget, State Senator Bob Wirch (D-Pleasant Prairie) wants the provision added back in.

Wirch says mandating coverage makes sure children get the help they need right away. He says that's because several studies have shown early treatment is crucial to helping kids overcome the disorder.

The Senate is already considering a bill that includes a similar provision . Wirch says it will have a better chance though if it's included in the state budget. The Pleasant Prairie Democrat says the bill has an uncertain future in the Assembly and doesn't want lawmakers to delay action on the measure.
