Florida's Choose Life license plate.

Wisconsin drivers could soon have the option to show support for adoption on their license plates. A bill from state Representative Andre Jacque (R-Bellevue) would create a Wisconsin “Choose Life” license plate, with money from fees directed toward an organization that promotes adoption alternatives instead of abortion.

The Bellevue Republican believes the plates would be very popular. At least 25 states have made similar options available for motorists and Jacque says his office has already received multiple calls from people interested in having a plate made in Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, State Representative Chris Taylor (D-Madison) is countering the proposal with a bill that would create a similar plate to benefit Planned Parenthood, arguing Jacque’s bill sends money to a group that does not even exist in the state yet. Jacque says he does not support that option, calling Planned Parenthood the “state and nation’s largest abortion provider.”

Jacque also accuses Taylor of trying to push through a proposal that would benefit her former employer. Taylor formerly worked as a lobbyist from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin.

Taylor says, if Jacque “really cared about choosing life he would support access to health care rather than cutting 29,000 children off of BadgerCare Plus, make sure our teens had access to comprehensive sex ed rather than mandating that teens be taught medically inaccurate information, and fund access to family planning services so women can plan and space healthy pregnancies instead of advancing bills to ban birth control.”

With the current session winding down, Jacque admits it will be difficult to get the plate approved this year. He does hope to reintroduce it next session.
