Convicted felons would be able to vote as soon as they're out of prison, under legislation introduced at the Capitol. The legislation from State Representative Joe Parisi (D-Madison) would restore the voting rights of felons after they've completed their time behind bars. Current law only restores voting rights after parole or probation periods are completed.

Parisi says the bill is needed to clean up a system that is confusing and sometimes traps felons who want to be a part of society again. The Madison Democrat also argues that the bill will eliminate the need for election judges to verify if somebody can legally vote.

Assembly Republican Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) says changing the current law would be "reckless and irresponsible" and an insult to victims. Suder says the proposal is "dead on arrival" in the Assembly.
