A legislative proposal at the Capitol would require sex offenders to carry a card identifying their crime. Under the bill, sex offenders convicted of the most serious offenses would have to carry a state issued ID or driver's license with the words "sex offender" printed on it. The label would be printed on the bottom right of a driver's license or ID card.

State Representative Gary Tauchen (R-Bonduel) is the bill's sponsor. He says the label could stop a convicted sex offender from trying to enter places where children are present, such as a school. Tauchen says many schools check IDs when a person is entering the building already, so a sex offender would be easily spotted.

Other proposals have been introduced this session to help identify sex offenders in public, such as special green license plates for vehicles. Tauchen says his proposal improves on that by limiting special requirements to just the offender.
