A state lawmaker wants to remove the Public Service Commission's oversight over rates for local telephone services.
State Senator Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee) says it's a way of "updating" the current system that's in place. He wants to streamline the process so phone companies don't have to keep going back to the PSC when they want to change their rates. Plale believe the change would promote more competition for local phone services, which would prevent rates from increasing too much.
Plale is also the author of a bill to deregulate the cable TV industry.
