A state senator is walking back his position on local restrictions for frac sand mining.
Hazelhurst Republican Tom Tiffany had introduced a bill back in October that would have severely limited what sort of ordinances, laws, or regulations local and county governments could put on frac sand operations. That would include air, water, blasting, and road restrictions.
Critics called the bill an attack on local control, and yesterday Tiffany introduced a new version. It strips out the prohibition against new environmental or blasting regulations by local government, but would not allow local changes to state codes on health and welfare.
Tiffany wants to get a hearing on the new bill by next week.
