Both chambers in the Wisconsin legislature are scheduled to vote Tuesday, on changes to the way schools are funded, by reducing the amount of property taxes school districts can raise to offset the cost of school vouchers.

In the Assembly, an amendment from Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) has drawn fire from superintendents concerned about reduced ability to offset a state aid reduction that pays for students in the state’s voucher program. “All of the demegougery that is ocurring from these sueperintendents, to say somehow it’s going to reduce their ability to raise property taxes, well that’s the point,” Vos said.

Vos attached the amendment to a bill making technical changes to the state’s new voucher program for students with disabilities. “I can only tell you that we were flooded with concerns by superintdents all over the state,” said Representative Sondy Pope (D-Cross Plains).

Some Senate Republicans have concerns over the Vos amendment, which would reduce the amount of districts’ revenue limit authority by about $14 million the first year.
