A racial slur that appears in a Lawrence University publication is leading campus officials to apologize. The photo was in the university’s annual report, and it shows a number of the school’s top officials, at Main Hall. In the background, there’s a beam that has the slur written on it, in graffiti.
Lawrence spokesman Craig Gagnon said the school is apologizing for the picture. Gagnon said the word has no place in any community, and the graffiti has been removed, and should not have escaped the notice of employees who out together the report. The apology comes weeks after some students at Lawrence complained about racial problems that they’ve encountered on and off the Appleton campus.
Lawrence student Oumou Cisse found out about the slur after an alumnus of the school posted the image on Facebook. Madison365 first reported the story Tuesday morning, according to the Appleton Post Crescent.
