To the spenders go the spoils — races for state Senate and Assembly are getting more expensive.
Millions spent on races for governor and Congress, even attorney general, no longer seem surprising. But, the spending is trickling down to races for the Assembly and Senate. Mike McCabe with the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says a typical election year with races for governor and attorney general will see fundraising taper off for legislative campaigns, but not this year. McCabe says candidates who had primary contests and had outspent their opponents through August 28 won most of those races. The money goes to campaign ads; direct mail, radio and increasingly even television; McCabe points to the vacant 21st state Senate District. “A lot of money is going to be spent on Milwaukee TV in that race,” says McCabe.
Democracy Campaign analysis shows more than $5 million was sitting in legislative campaign accounts at the end of August.
