The state Department of Transportation says the Leo Frigo Bridge in Green Bay will reopen to traffic this coming Sunday morning, twelve days ahead of schedule.

Crews have been working to repair the bridge since this fall, after a section of the bridge sagged in late September because a support pier sank unexpectedly. The bridge has been closed since September 25, while the state evaluated the support system and made arrangements to get the repair work started.

The announcement means the bridge will be available for traffic heading to Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field, where the Green Bay Packers are to set take on the San Francisco 49ers in a wild card play-off game.

The bridge had initially be sent to reopen on January 17. DOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb says the contractor, Zenith Tech, will get a $750,000 bonus for finishing early.

Governor Scott Walker says it was important to get the bridge open as soon as possible, because having it closed was having a daily economic impact of $310,000. He’s praising the “outstanding team of workers, contractors, and local officials for your remarkable job in getting this project completed ahead of schedule.”
