Two and a half million dollars could go to Milwaukee to fund a high tech crime fighting initiative if a federal appropriations bill is approved. The Milwaukee County District Attorney is applauding Senator Herb Kohl for helping the funding clear the Commerce, Justice and Science subcommittee. DA John Chisolm says the money will be used for a Gunshot Location System which he says look like cameras.

The technology, originally developed for the military, can pinpoint where gunfire is happening by detecting the high pitched frequency of gunfire then triangulating on that signal. The accompanying cameras can then focus on that specific area and begin recording. The advantage is cameras do not need to constantly "roll" on useless footage.

Officers can then be deployed immediately to the spot where the gunfire occurred. Chisolm says the Location System will also help prevent gun related crimes as potential deterrents.

The DA says Chicago has been using the technology which has shown successful
