Stopping repeat drunk drivers requires a “multifaceted, comprehensive approach, ” according the executive director of MADD in Wisconsin .

Kerri Kinnard commented after a man with seven drunk driving convictions allegedly fled the scene of a head on crash Sunday, on I-90 in Dane County. A Lake Geneva man was critically injured in the crash. “There have been efforts (in the legislature) . . to crack down on high risk drunk drivers, including repeat offenders,” says Kinnard. “Bu we need to do more.”

Kinnard says dealing with repeat drunk drivers requires things like ignition interlock switches, and getting tougher when it comes to sentencing; “multiple offenders definitely need to serve some long term prison time.” Kinnard says alcohol treatment for OWI offenders is also important.

The State Patrol said the driver who caused Sunday's crash, 38 year-old Mark Spangler, was driving with a revoked license and likely had been drinking before he crossed the median and struck a van carrying a family from Lake Geneva.
