Alice Wei Zhao, 16, of Sheboygan is among 40 finalists at the Intel Science Talent Search being held in Washington DC. She’ll find out today how well she did in the competition where $630,000 worth of prizes, including scholarship money, is on-the-line.

The competition process in the nation’s capitol has been intensive which includes presentations and a series of four interviews with a three judge panel. Alice says there is no way to prepare for the questioning, “they (questions) range from anything to really complex to really abstract, to most random things like ‘can dragons exist?”

The 16-year-old is the only Wisconsinite at the competition this year.

Alice developed a portable device that heats up gas using magnetic induction. The Sheboygan North High School student came up with the idea while researching at the Mechanical Engineering Department at UW-Milwaukee. In the future, she hopes to attend MIT or Caltech and one day become a biomedical engineer or patent lawyer.
