State budget writers have approved more cops on the street in Milwaukee. The Joint Finance Committee debated at length, over Governor Jim Doyle's budget proposal to put more police officers in Milwaukee. Republican Rep. Scott Suder of Abbotsford questioned that. "I will subtly and respectfully remind the committee that there is life outside Milwaukee," said Suder. Milwaukee Democrat, Rep. Pedro Colon, argued Milwaukee is essential to the state's economy, and more cops are essential to Milwaukee. Milwaukee area Republicans, Rep. Jeff Stone and Sen. Alberta Darling joined Democrats as the budget writing committee eventually approved $500,000 to hire more police over the next two years, half what Doyle had requested.
