A ban on sales of cheap alcohol in downtown Madisonm, as the City Council approves the conditions to liquor licenses at grocery, convenience, and liquor stores in the central business district. That means no more sales of less than a six pack of beer or malt liquor, fortified wine, and less than a pint of liquor. The goal is to cut down on public intoxication. But Alderwoman Marsha Rummel still has some concerns. "This ban doesn't solve the problem," says Rummel. 'The problem is people who have mental health and alcohol issues. They need help. Banning the product doesn't help them." The city's Alcohol License Review Committee is considering whether to expand the conditions to liquor licenses in the areas surrounding the city's downtown.
