Madison could lead the way for the rest of the state, in efforts to improve access to Emergency Contraception. A proposal from Madison City Council Alder Zach Brandon would require pharmacies that don't provide emergency contraceptives to post a notice for customers, telling them where they can obtain the drug.
Brandon says the ordinance is not a mandate for pharmacies to carry the drug. It just requires them to inform customers where they can get drugs such as “Plan B” if they're not available at that store.
Kelda Roys, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, says there's a real need for the ordinance across the state. She says many women have a hard time finding emergency contraceptives when they're needed. A study conducted by NARAL found that 42% of pharmacies in the state's 16 largest cities don't even stock emergency contraceptives.
NARAL Pro-Choice hopes to introduce the ordinance in other communities as well.
