Officials in Brown County say nine people were arrested this week in connection with a Northeast Wisconsin heroin ring. However, police and prosecutors are not saying much more about the circumstances leading up to the arrests. Court documents in connection with the case have been sealed and kept secret by a judge.
The nine suspects appeared in Brown County court Wednesday afternoon. At that time, formal charges were not filed, but prosecutors laid out their case and indicated that the arrests were in connection with what prosecutors believe was the largest heroin distribution operation in the region. Prosecutors say the drug operation has been going on for about a year. And they say there were multiple levels of involvement.
Jafari Mahonie of Chicago is the alleged ringleader, according to prosecutors. Mahonie had his bond set at $250,000 cash. Samuel Fuss, also accused of involvement at a high level, is being held on a $150,000 cash bond. Three others facing heroin charges did not appear in court Wednesday. Prosecutors would not say if they are part of the large operation.
The suspects are expected back in court later this month.
