Police have arrested a Wausau man for fatally stabbing a friend as the two fought while driving around town late Thursday night.
Everest Metro police say 18-year-old Charles Mattson stabbed 24-year-old Larry Johnson three times during an argument. Chief Dan Vergin says it appears Johnson was harassing the driver. Vergin says Mattson apparently though he was coming to the rescue of a woman when he stabbed the victim.
Some other friends in the car took Johnson to a local hospital where he died. Police identified Mattson as a suspect, arrested him at home a short time later and obtained his confession to the crime. Vergin says he gave a written confession to detectives, in which he admitted to stabbing Johnson three times.
Vergin says police are still trying to figure out where the friends were going and why the argument began.
Mattson is being jailed on a first-degree intentional homicide charge. He was charged just two weeks ago with burglary, substantial battery and drug possession.
