A Marshfield man accused of shooting at police near Wausau during a traffic stop this summer has been found incompetent to stand trial. A Marathon County judge accepted a psychologist's finding that Errol Demmerly is not mentally fit, even as Demmerly maintained he can assist in his own defense. Demmerly protested the findings of his competency exam – urging a judge to set the case for a pre-trial hearing.
Demmerly faces attempted homicide and reckless endangerment charges for shooting at Rothschild and Kronenwetter police during a traffic stop. The shootings were caught on a squad's dashboard video, but Demmerly maintains he'll be acquitted when his case goes to trial. Demmerly could spend the next year having his competency restored at a state mental health facility. The court will review the status of his treatment in three months.
