A Manitowoc man has left Los Angeles with an Emmy award. Garth Neustadter – a 2005 Manitowoc Lutheran graduate – won a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for his original dramatic score in the outstanding music composition category held Saturday night in L.A.
Neustadter says it was a “complete surprise” to win, as part of the American Masters PBS documentary, “John Muir in the New World.”
Muir was a 19th century Wisconsin native, world renowned author and scientist who spent a lot of time at Yosemite National Park in Wyoming.
Last year, Neustadter earned his Bachelor of Music degree in violin and voice from Lawrence University. Emmy award winning filmmaker Catherine Tatge chose him after looking for someone from her Alma matter, Lawrence, to write the documentary score.
One could says music is in the new Emmy winner’s blood. His mother is a band director in Manitowoc schools while his father is retired as a music teacher from the Two Rivers School district. “I owe so much to them because they really helped shape my future in pursuing so many types of music.”
He recently finished a score for a Chinese TV production and is currently working on a score for Turner Classic Movies while pursuing a master’s degree at Yale University.
