Nearly two dozen Marinette high school students and one teacher are safe, after a 15-year-old student held them hostage for about five hours yesterday.

The incident ended when the boy shot himself, and he’s now at a hospital.

Marinette police chief Jeff Skorik says the situation started around 3 p.m.

Skorik says the boy let five of the 23 students go around 7:30 p.m., so they could use the bathroom. About a half-hour later, officers outside of the classroom heard three gunshots and went inside.

He says the boy then turned one of the two handguns on himself, and his condition isn’t known.

Storik says the remaining students were evacuated and reunited with their families.

School is canceled for today so police and school officials can investigate.
