Maryland has suspended freshman center Diamond Stone one game on Monday for an incident late in the first half of its 70-57 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday night in College Park, Maryland.
Stone shoved Badgers junior forward Vitto Brown’s head to the floor after the two scrambled for a rebound with 1.8 seconds left in the half. Officials went to replay before assessing a contact technical foul to Stone and a technical foul to Badger forward Charlie Thomas, who came to Brown’s defense.
Maryland coach Mark Turgeon suspended Stone for the Terrapins’ game Thursday at Minnesota. Turgeon also issued an apology to Badger coach Greg Gard, saying Stone’s actions were “a poor representation of the standards” at Maryland.
Stone helped Whitefish Bay Dominican win four straight WIAA Division 4 state titles and is averaging 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in his first season with the Terrapins. He called his actions “unacceptable” in a statement released by Maryland.
“I regret that I let the emotions of the game get the best of me,” Stone said in the statement. “I let my team down and I accept full responsibility for my actions.”
Stone called Brown on Sunday to apologize.
The Big Ten also publicly reprimanded Stone for his actions.
