Marquette University granted freshman forward Jeronne Maymon his release from a scholarship in Thursday.  Maymon won’t be able to go to any other Big East school, per conference rule.  Maymon also can’t enroll at the University of Wisconsin and play basketball for the Badgers.  Maymon grew up in Madison, playing high school basketball at local power Madison Memorial.

Maymon played a total of 9 games in his freshman season, averaging around 4-points and 4-rebounds a game.  Coach Buzz Williams said Maymon and his family weren’t happy with the progress he was making at Marquette.

Maymon was a two-time AP Player of the Year in Wisconsin and one of Buzz Williams’ first major signees after he took over for Tom Crean.

The 6’6 Maymon likes playing guard or small forward, but because Marquette is a smaller team, he was often forced to play down low.  Maymon’s father, Tim, told the Wisconsin State Journal that the situation wasn’t working out.

“He’s not being used the way he needs to be used, so we’re moving on,” said Tim Maymon.  Tim Maymon said Buzz Williams promised his son a certain amount of playing time, but Williams said he never promised anything.

Marquette will play for the first time since Maymon’s departure, tomorrow (Saturday) against North Florida.
