Green Bay Packers head coach admitted what we already knew. Eddie Lacy needs to lose some weight if he hopes to regain the bruising style of running he brought in his first two years in the NFL.
“Eddie Lacy, he’s got a lot of work to do,” McCarthy said. “His offseason last year was not good enough, and he never recovered from it. He cannot play at the weight he was at this year.”
McCarthy actually benched Lacy twice during the season, once for a general lack of production and the second time for missing curfew the night before the team’s December 3rd game at Detroit.
Lacy put together back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons but saw his rushing total drop to 758 yards and three touchdowns during the regular season this year.
Lacy rushed for 152 yards on 24 carries during the two-game playoff run, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. But one of those carries went for 61 yards. If you set that run aside, then Lacy gained 91 yards on 23 carries and his per carry average went down to 3.9. Not to mention, his conditioning came into play on the 61-yard run when he struggled to finish it.
McCarthy didn’t discuss a target weight for Lacy, but it would appear the former Alabama star will need to drop at least 30 pounds and maybe more to put himself back into the shape that he was in when first entering the NFL.
